Arsene Wenger has expressed his anguish over his Arsenal team performance during the Uefa Champions League match against Monaco of France yesterday. This comes after the English premier league side lost 3-1 to Ligue 1 club AS Monaco yesterday in London. The Arsenal manager is furious of his players poor performance at home last night that resulted into humiliation when the team was outplayed by Monaco failing to use home advantage to win the game at their own stadium.
AS Monaco came to this game as underdogs with the Arsenal fans citing that they were lucky to be drawn with the French club hence confidently hoping that Arsenal will easily win the match to increase chances of qualifying for the last 8 of the UEFA Champions League competition. However it was not to be as Monaco came in to this game with the same attitude that they are better off being drawn with Arsenal.
As expected by most Arsenal fans, the Gunners started the game with a lot of pace and dominance in the first 15 minutes of the game creating chances but not converting any of them. Ozil ,Alexis and Carzola were the main culprit of the game causing trouble towards the Monaco defense but not being able to break the deadlock as the former French champions were too sharp at the back with a solid defence.
Arsenal kept on attacking and knocking at the Monaco door but nothing ever came out of the efforts to penetrate the organised defense of Monaco.Arsenal were not very tight at the back when they move and they were often threatened with counter attacks .As a result the first goal for Monaco came in the first half courtesy of Geoffrey Kondogbia who hit a powerful shot outside the box that deflected to the Arsenal defender and went in leaving the Gunner’s goalkeeper helpless.
The second goal came during the second half when Dimitar Berbatov was set up in a Monaco counter and capitalized leaving the Arsenal goalkeeper stranded once again. It looked like the French had sealed this one and they could have scored a couple of more goals as they created more chances throughout the game. The first leg match however was far from being settled as the home side continued to attack hoping to get a goal or two out of the match, the combination of Alexis and Ozil was almost effective but still they were not allowed to play through or behind the Monaco defense.
Oxlaide- Chamberlain was introduced later in the game and the game changed a bit as the English side created chances once again, the goal finally came on the the last minute of the match when Oxlaide- Chamberlain placed a rebound to the top right corner making the score 2-1. Arsenal was very clumsy on the ball later in the game and the careless mistake by the same goal scorer Oxlaide- Chamberlain resulted in the third goal for AS Monaco when Carrasco was set up with a through ball and made sure his team secure the match with a 3-1 win. Arsenal will need luck and self belief when they travel to Monaco in early March for the second leg.
