FC Bayern Munich will play tonight’s first match of the DFB Cup without eight key players .The German club mentioned on their website that Senior players such as Jerome Boateng, Arjen Robben and Xabi Alonso have all been sidelined ahead of this clash due to injuries.Douglas Costa, Holger Badstuber, Renato Sanches ,Kingsley Coman and Thiago are the other players who have picked up injuries. None of these players will participate in the DFB Cup, Bayern coach Carlo Ancelotti will have no choice but to work with the players he has available.
Bayern are playing Carl Zeiss Jena (Regionalliga Nordost) on Friday night and Carlos Ancelotti is no stranger to the the Thuringia side. He was part of the Roma squad that played Jena in the 1980 European Cup Winner’s Cup. Roma won the first leg of that final 3-0 and the Italians were almost certain that they had won the tittle but Jena came back to win the competition 4-0 on the second leg.
When asked about that match the Italian veteran coach said : “In the course of a career, some defeats are unforgettable,” “I’m delighted to be going back 36 years later,” he added.“You always get surprises in the cup, in every country, We know the big teams have to watch out wherever they go. We’re favourites but we have to be careful. We have to be focused, because tomorrow’s game is important to us.” commented Carlo Ancelotti, who knows a task lies for him to win the first match of the DFB Cup.
When asked about the Jena clash, Bayern Munich captain Philip Lahm said: “We know what the people in Jena are thinking. It’s great when you draw FC Bayern in the first round. I guess everyone in Jena was thrilled,” added Lahm.“I think we’ve handled the first round well in recent years. We’ve controlled the matches, kept it tight and scored our goals.” Insisted the fullback well aware of the pressure he has on his shoulders.
