Mamelodi Sundowns are now one point away from reaching semi finals of the CAF Champions League. The PSL giants are currently top of Group B and only need one point to qualify for semi-finals as they host Zamalek in Atteridgeville on Wednesday.
The Egyptian giants are three points behind Sundowns who are leading the group with six points.Nigerian outfit Enyimba are third , the group consist of only three teams as Algerian side ES Setif were kicked out for crowd misbehavior.
Mamelodi Sundowns are doing well in the championship and the club’s veteran coach says this is a result of hard work. He also mentions that winning the league last season gave them more confidence and motivation to go on and compete in Africa.
“I guess we’re riding on the momentum of the league,” he said. “We’re just flowing with what happened.
“I think after the Jomo Cosmos and Polokwane City games we went to Ajax Cape Town, which was very tough for us and it didn’t look good – we settled for a point.
“Since then we haven’t stopped, even after Tuks, the league was wrapped up but we kept going. We went to Wits and kept on with the momentum.
“We are just in that beautiful whirlpool, where we just keep going. It’s a very good dream and I hope we don’t wake up. Let’s keep dreaming.”
Even though Mamelodi Sundowns have clinched a lot of domestic tittles they are yet to win the CAF Championship League. Pitso Mosimane will be hoping that this drought will be over soon and judging by the way they played in the league last season , the Brazilians are favorites to reach the final of this tough competition. Orlando Pirates are the only side that have won this competition, Bucs took the tittle two decades ago but have failed to repeat that in over twenty years so who knows maybe Sundowns are the club to bring the second golden star to South Africa.
