Cavani scores and sends PSG through

Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani converted a goal after 56 minutes to make sure that PSG  qualifies for the last sixteen of the UEFA Champions League.The expensive forward scored a goal to ensure that they go forward to the knockout stages of the European competition credit to former Napoli target man Edinson Cavani.

Paris wasted no time in making sure that they secure their spot in the group which consist of The Spanish La Liga giants Barcelona and the Dutch Eredivisie side Ajax Amsterdam.With Barcelona having qualified already, the French Ligue 1 side had to make sure that they play their part to get a spot in the tight group.The former champions of France booked their spot convincingly with the courtesy of Cavani himself.

Coach Laurent Blanc had mentioned before the match that it is essential for the team to score an early goal which eventually came and was converted with quality.The Uruguayan forward displayed precision when he squeezed a volley in to the net after a low cross by Gregory van der Wiel.

The goal gave Paris motivation and confidence as the came after Apoel time after time but could not scored another as Salvatore Sirigu touched away a good  header from the corner which could have been a goal. Apoel did not give PSG any noticeable problems as a result this caused the French side to attack even more looking for other goals.

PSG continued putting pressure on the visitors as a wing play was started by PSG going forward until the corner was whipped which saw the striker Cavani strike with the header.The effort hit the crossbar with the rebound of that ball not being utilized well.The French side could have converted a lot of chances but somehow they failed to take chances presented to them.

Apoel on the other hand came to this game with a bad record of having never won a game away from home and did not look like they were willling to change the history during the match against PSG.When the game was nearing the end Paris began knocking the ball around making sure that they run down the clock and the match eventually ended with PSG being victorious.The journey is yet to start for PSG as they will now face big giants of Europe in the knockout stages.

Paris Saint Germain is always competitive in the European Competitions and has reached the knockout stages of the Uefa Champions league knockout stages in the last couple of years.The club has not been able though to go all the way to the finals even though the club has been spending a lot in the last couple of years.Having purchased quality players such as Zlatan Ibrahamovic and Edinson Cavani,the team will be looking to go all the way through in this season of the Uefa Champions league.

 Edinson Cavani career fact file

Edinson Cavani started his career playing for Danubio in Montevideo for two seasons but later moved to Palermo in Italy by year 2007. Cavani scored 34 goals in 109 league games at Palermo,in 2010 he moved to Napoli on a fee of 17 million euros.He had been on loan for Napoli but ended up being bought by the Naples side after stunning performances.

Cavani scored 33 goals in his second season with Napoli  and 38 goals in his third becoming the top goal scorer in the Serie A league that season.He was then transferred to France champions PSG breaking the  French record with 64.5 euros spent for the Uruguayan.He scored his first international goal against Colombia back in 2008 and has played over sixty games for the Uruguayan side and he has scored over twenty three goal for the South American side. Cavani has participated in at least four international tournaments for Uruguay.

The striker played in the 2010 Fifa World cup where he scored one goal and also participated  in the 2011 Copa America that Uruguay won . Cavani also played in the 2013 Fifa Confederations Cup and 2014 World Cup where he scored a crucial goal in the semi finals to equalize against Brazil but the Uruguay ended up losing the game 2-1.He also scored in the same competition against Italy in the third place consolation match that was eventually lost by Uruguay in penalties. Cavani scored against Costa Rica  in the 2014 Fifa World Cup but Uruguay did not go far in the competition as they were knocked out just after the group stages.
