Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich was challenged to a 0-0 draw against Schalke in Ukraine. The German side dominated most of the match especially in the first half but failed to to score goals. The matters got worse when Alonso was given a second yellow, things just got harder for Bayern to score and Shaktar was not willing to go down without a fight.
Guardiola made three changes on the lineup that played Schalke and Bayern started attacking as soon as the game started and it looked like they were going to score an early goal when German Veteran Bastian Schweinsteiger almost converted the first goal with a volley effort that was intercepted by the goalkeeper. The Bundesliha side came back again Arjen Robben almost scoring but the goalkeeper saved again and the second shot by Muller from a rebound was not accurate enough to threaten the Shaktar goalkeeper.
Bayern continued to attack throughout the first half and Thomas Muller almost converted in the 31st minute of the match but the effort was worthless again. Robben also gave the home side a lot of trouble but the visitors still failed to convert an away goal with Frank Ribery missing his chance as well. Shaktar Donetsk played well to contain the German Bundesliga champions in the first half but did not create many chances for themselves, Shaktar forwards did not get enough supply of the ball from the midfield as the visitors dominated most of the first half.
The second half began with a more attacking Bayern Munich side, once again Basten Schweinsteiger came back and created another chance but it was not to be for the visitors as the shot was stopped by the goalkeeper.Again Robben came back with another attacking threat but his effort was stopped by the Skaktar goalkeeper. After picking a yellow card earlier, Xavi Alonso was unfortunate enough to get another yellow and got sent off in the 65th minute of the second half .However the Shaktar Donetsk side failed to take advantage after the red visitors got a red card, they still could’nt manage to beat a 10men Bayern Munich even though they had a 12th man as their home advantage.
Bayern made a substitution and put in Lewandoski and Badstuber to neutralise the game and soon after the change one saw German visitors attack again courtesy of Frank Ribery who whipped a cross for Lewandoski that went wide of the post. The game eventually finished with a 0-0 draw as both teams settled for a point which will see both teams play the second leg balanced in terms of points, however the Munich side will have a slight advantage because they will be playing at home.
Since Bayern did not manage to score a goal away in Ukraine it means they do not have an advantage so they will be going all out in the second leg to ensure they take the game from Shaktar. The German side will be looking to ensure that they do better in the UEFA knockout stages that they did last year.
The second leg is definitely going to be a banger as Bayern will be looking to ensure that they use the home ground support to their advantage. Shaktar on the other hand will not be going down without a fight, the Ukrainian side will be travelling to Germany with a bit of confidence as they managed to hold the German giants off in the first leg.The second leg will be played in the second week of march in Germany.
Both sides will now focus on the domestic league as both teams are fighting to win their respective tittles but they will also be preparing for for the second leg. Bayern Munich are leading on the Bundesliga table with Wolfsburg chasing in the second position. The German Champions will be seeking to win tthe domestic league and defend it as remarkably won it last season. The club is also looking to win the Champions League tittle as they were upset by Real Madrid last year beating them in the semi finals.Shaktar Donetsk hasve also been doing well in the domestic league and they are hoping to write their name in the history books by beating Bayern Munich at home and hence go through to the Champions League round of 16.
